Vivien Leigh Documentary - Legends GWTW

Vivien Leigh Documentary - Legends GWTW

This is what we've been looking for gone

A screening and discussion of the legendary Vivienne Leigh focusing on her role in "GWTW", the American Classic about its Production and subsequent history!

Gone with the Wind is a 1939 American epic historical romance film adapted from the 1936 novel by Margaret Mitchell. The film was produced by David O. Selznick of Selznick International Pictures and directed by Victor Fleming. Set in the American South against the backdrop of the American Civil War and the Reconstruction era, the film tells the story of Scarlett O'Hara, the strong-willed daughter of a Georgia plantation owner. It follows her romantic pursuit of Ashley Wilkes, who is married to his cousin, Melanie Hamilton, and her subsequent marriage to Rhett Butler. The leading roles are played by Vivien Leigh (Scarlett), Clark Gable (Rhett), Leslie Howard (Ashley), and Olivia de Havilland (Melanie).

Production was difficult from the start. Filming was delayed for two years because of Selznick's determination to secure Gable for the role of Rhett Butler, and the "search for Scarlett" led to 1,400 women being interviewed for the part. The original screenplay was written by Sidney Howard and underwent many revisions by several writers in an attempt to get it down to a suitable length. The original director, George Cukor, was fired shortly after filming began and was replaced by Fleming, who in turn was briefly replaced by Sam Wood while Fleming took some time off due to exhaustion.

The film received positive reviews upon its release in December 1939, although some reviewers found it to be too long. The casting was widely praised, and many reviewers found Leigh especially suited to her role as Scarlett. At the 12th Academy Awards, it received ten Academy Awards (eight competitive, two honorary) from thirteen nominations, including wins for Best Picture, Best Director (Fleming), Best Adapted Screenplay (posthumously awarded to Sidney Howard), Best Actress (Leigh), and Best Supporting Actress (Hattie McDaniel, becoming the first African American to win an Academy Award). It set records for the total number of wins and nominations at the time.

Gone with the Wind was immensely popular when first released. It became the highest-earning film made up to that point, and held the record for over a quarter of a century. When adjusted for monetary inflation, it is still the highest-grossing film in history. It was re-released periodically throughout the 20th century and became ingrained in popular culture. The film is regarded as one of the greatest films of all time; it has placed in the top ten of the American Film Institute's list of the top 100 American films since the list's inception in 1998. In 1989, the United States Library of Congress selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry. (Wikipedia)

Book Club: Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson

Book Club: Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson

The first book club discussion for HWHC students this summer is "Just Mercy" by Bryan Stevenson.

About this Event

Summary: Bryan Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system. One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillian, a young man who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted he didn’t commit. The case drew Bryan into a tangle of conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinksmanship—and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever.

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE STARRING MICHAEL B. JORDAN AND JAMIE FOXX • A powerful true story about the potential for mercy to redeem us, and a clarion call to fix our broken system of justice—from one of the most brilliant and influential lawyers of our time.

-Meeting will take place over Microsoft Teams. A calendar invite link will be sent to participants the morning of.

-If you need help with the cost of purchasing the book, please contact sheila.kelly@utdallas.edu.

 Letter from the competition director

Hello filmmakers, screenwriters, and storytellers,

Austin Film Festival serves to further the art and craft of storytelling by inspiring and championing the work of storytellers. That’s what we do and who we are. COVID-19 has not changed this mission for us. We still intend to put great stories in front of our audiences and in front of the film industry. Our whole team is working on exactly how to do this right now. Our competitions will continue, our selections will continue, AFF will continue.

For starters, we’re expanding our completion date requirement for films back to January 1st, 2019 (previously April 1, 2019), so your window for what we consider eligible has grown. Second, if you’re missing color, or sound, or effects for your film, but it’s story and narrative is complete and stands on its own, we’ll consider it fairly and you’ll have until October to polish those last parts.

If you’re uncertain about the eligibility of your project or if you have any questions at all, please reach out to me. My virtual door is always open. I’m here, our programming team is here, AFF is here.

Stay healthy and stay inspired!

Best,
Rob Gonzalez – Film Competition Director

Registration Opens for Highly Anticipated In-Person 2021 NAB Show and Co-located Events

*** Announcement Only ***
No Crew List enrollment - Enroll via links below!

–Radio Show and NAB Sales and Management Television Exchange (SMTE) launch registration, which includes NAB Show exhibit hall pass and access to select NAB Show sessions–
–New tiered packages offer attendees flexibility and personalized experiences–

Washington, D.C. — Registration is open for the 2021 NAB Show, the premier convention for broadcasters and the broader media, entertainment and technology industries, taking place October 9–13, 2021 in Las Vegas. NAB Show co-located events, including Radio Show and NAB’s Sales and Management Television Exchange (SMTE), have also launched registration.

SMTE, October 8–9, is the industry’s only national conference focused on innovative revenue-generating strategies for small and medium market television stations and kicks off one day prior to the start of NAB Show. The Radio Show, October 13–14, co-produced by the Radio Advertising Bureau, offers comprehensive sessions, networking opportunities and technology presentations for the audio community to explore all aspects of radio, podcasting and streaming.

All NAB Show and co-located event registrants receive access to the NAB Show floor, open October 10–13, as well as all-access NAB Show Main Stage sessions and special events.

“We look forward to delivering the first live, major domestic industry event following a long hiatus for all events,” said Chris Brown, NAB executive vice president and managing director, Global Connections and Events. “NAB Show represents a significant annual business catalyst for the media industry, which is eager to get back to doing business face-to-face, according to recent trade show attendee research. With momentum building toward the show in October, we continue to prioritize health and safety with a sound plan in place to deliver a safe experience for our community.”

Multiple registration packages and tiered options allow attendees to personalize their conference experience, access new content and product demonstrations and network across communities. Dual-site sessions, such as the previously announced partnership with SCTE·ISBE Cable-Tec Expo, increase flexibility as attendees return to in-person events.

NAB Show, Radio Show, SMTE and associated event registration packages are available here.

Qualified members of the media may apply for press registration here.

About this event

Paramount Ranch has been a special place in film history since 1927. It is the National Park Service's only site dedicated to interpreting American film history. The Paramount Ranch property is a working movie ranch that allows the public to see filmmaking in progress.   The diverse landscape, however, was the real star of the show. It offered filmmakers the freedom to create distant locales such as colonial Massachusetts to ancient China.

Travel the world with Ranger Master and take a sneak peek behind the scenes of Hollywood filmmaking at Paramount Ranch. This 2-hour walk is limited to 25 people, so be sure to register.

Don't forget your sun hat, sunscreen, water, hiking/walking shoes and camera! Meet us at the first bridge on the edge of the parking lot on Saturday, August 21st at 9:00am. This event is open to everyone.

Questions? Call the Visitor Center at 805-370-2301.

The Nature Makers Film and Q&A with Director

The Nature Makers Film and Q&A with Director

The Nature Makers Film and Q&A with Director

“The Nature Makers” is a moving portrait of passionate people and the extraordinary creatures they’re fighting to preserve.

About this event

Film is free to watch September 28, 12:00 AM-11:30 PM

Live Q&A with Director Scott Saunders: September 28, 7 PM

In a world increasingly dominated by humans, three teams of wildlife conservationists go to extraordinary and seemingly unnatural lengths to try to save three threatened species in the American heartland.

Stunningly photographed in the Grand Canyon and on the American prairie, “The Nature Makers” follows rugged biologists who’ve deployed helicopters, giant bulldozers and a host of human tools to defend wild nature. In the 21st century, defending the wild often requires, quite paradoxically, technology and aggressive human intervention.

This film will be open to watch from home from 12:00 AM-11:30 PM on September 28th.

Free and open to all. Donations are welcome and go to support our local arts community. Make donations at https://pentanglearts.org/get-involved/donations/

Hosted by Sustainable Woodstock and Pentangle Arts. Made possible by our underwriters VERMONT COMMUNITY FOUNDATION and MASCOMA BANK and sponsors Ellaway Group, The Unicorn, and Mark Knott DDS.

Hollywood Foreign Press Association - 79th Annual Golden Globes

Hollywood Foreign Press Association - 79th Annual Golden Globes
Helen and Snoop
President Helen Hoehne and Snoop Dogg - HFPA

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) has announced the nominees for the 79th Annual Golden Globe Awards from the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. For the first time, the announcement was live-streamed at goldenglobes.com and on the Golden Globes YouTube channel.

The nominations were announced by HFPA president Helen Hoehne and the multi-talented Snoop Dogg.

In yet another first time, submissions were not required for award consideration this year. However, the HFPA accommodated filmmakers/studios who requested their content to be considered only for specific categories.

Over the last eight months, the HFPA has completely overhauled its bylaws, implementing sweeping changes from top to bottom that address ethics and code of conduct, diversity, equity and inclusion, governance, membership, and more. Recently, the HFPA admitted their largest and most diverse class to date of 21 new members, all of whom are first-time Golden Globe voters.

Acclaimed film historian Steven C Smith tells the story of how Olivia De Havilland changed Hollywood.

About this event

What do Courtney Love, Jared Leto and Johnny Carson have in common? All took greater control of their careers by using “the de Havilland law”—the result of a landmark legal battle between a movie star and a studio that would change not just the film industry, but music and TV as well.

Join us for the story of one of Hollywood’s most resilient stars: two-time Oscar winner Olivia de Havilland.

Olivia De Havilland

We’ll go inside Hollywood dream factories of the 1930s and ‘40s, and explore the exciting, sometimes brutal challenges of making movies now considered classics.

We’ll cover the dramatic court case Olivia brought against Warner Bros. that changed not only her career, but countless others.

We’ll go behind the scenes of her legendary onscreen teaming with Errol Flynn, for films like The Adventures of Robin Hood—and find out why the two, who shared an off-camera passion, could never be a couple.

And we’ll find out why Olivia, at age 101, took producer Ryan Murphy (Glee, Feud) to court, making headlines around the world.

Stephen C. Smith

About the Speaker:

Steven C. Smith is an award-winning author and four-time Emmy-nominated producer. His over 200 documentaries for television and other media include Thou Shalt Not: Sex, Sin and Censorship in Pre-Code Hollywood. Steven is also the author of two biographies: Music by Max Steiner: The Epic Life of Hollywood’s Most Influential Composer, and A Heart at Fire’s Center: The Life and Music of Bernard Herrmann.

Some of the things covered in class include:

-The basic elements of camera prep

-Techniques of focus pulling
-Know your tools: wireless setups, video assist & assistant tools
-Navigating common set issues

-Set politics and how to work with other departments

One lucky attendee will win a seat of DaVinci Resolve Studio ($295 value), so make sure to join us! Must be a member to win (free to join).

Film at Lincoln Center announces a call for short film submissions beginning today for the 60th New York Film Festival (NYFF), taking place from September 30 to October 16, 2022. Returning every fall to celebrate a new slate of essential cinematic offerings from around the globe, NYFF has been an enduring part of New York’s rich cultural and historical landscape since 1963. Produced by Film at Lincoln Center, the 60th edition will run 17 days and promises another year of incredible film offerings from around the globe.

Short film submissions will be accepted via FilmFreeway from March 28 through June 3, and for the duration of this window, the entry fee is $45. This fee will help fund a seasonal staff of short film submissions screeners as well as additional festival operations, including artist support. NYFF is noncompetitive, and all sections are curated by the selection committee with support from an international roster of programming advisors and screeners. Only short films (40 minutes or less) are accepted through FilmFreeway.

NYFF’s call for short film submissions provides an opportunity for new and emerging filmmakers to share their work. In addition to short film submissions collected via FilmFreeway, the NYFF60 selection committee considers recommendations from alumni and industry colleagues, as well as work that has premiered in international festivals and galleries since the previous edition of NYFF. Submitted films will be evaluated by NYFF60 programming staff and considered equally with all other prospective entrants. All films submitted through FilmFreeway will be notified of their status by August 5.

Click to register at Film Freeway

GENERAL RULES

4. Films that have had private, unpublicized screenings are eligible for submission to NYFF.
5. Films that have been previously submitted to NYFF are ineligible.
6. Films publicly exhibited before the 2021 edition of NYFF (September 24, 2021) are ineligible.
7. All applicants must complete the official festival submission form located on FilmFreeway.
8. NYFF reserves the right to disqualify any film not submitted through these websites without refund of any application fees.
9. The applicant holds the sole responsibility of copyright clearance of any copyrighted material in the film. Films including unauthorized copyrighted material are ineligible.

2. Multiple versions of the same film will not be considered. Only the first submitted version of a film will be considered for NYFF.
3. If the submitted film does not play, NYFF staff will make an attempt to contact the applicant based on the contact information supplied at the time of submission in order to obtain a replacement. If a replacement is not available, NYFF reserves the right to disqualify the film without refunding the submission fees.
4. NYFF will attempt, but is under no obligation, to view a submission that arrives after the designated deadline without refund of the submission fee.
5. Submitted films that qualify based on the regulations and eligibility requirements stated here will be seen by NYFF programming staff and be considered equally with all other submissions.
6. NYFF reserves the right to disqualify any film for non-payment of the submission fee. NYFF will attempt to contact the applicant based on the contact information supplied at the time of submission in order to resolve non-payment status.
7. Applicants acknowledge that NYFF reserves the right to change the nature of screenings and events due to circumstances related to public health and welfare or at the direction of local, state, or federal authorities. In such cases no submission refunds shall be issued.

UCLA Film & Television Archive presents free screenings at the Billy Wilder Theater at the Hammer Museum.

About this event

Please review our admission policies.

In person: Karina Longworth, writer, producer and narrator of the You Must Remember This podcast.

In the 1940s, the vast majority of producers working in Hollywood were men. But along with Virginia Van Upp and Joan Harrison, Harriet Parsons (1906-1983) was one of the very few women able to make her mark as a feature film producer during this decade. Parsons got her start at Columbia and, after years being denied on-screen credit, moved to Republic Pictures in 1940. She would produce a total of six feature films with RKO before the gender-based roadblocks became too much to bear; she gave up producing in the mid-1950s and moved in with her longtime partner, Evelyn Farney. The evening’s screening will be introduced by Karina Longworth, writer, producer and narrator of the You Must Remember This podcast.

Meet the Stars #1: Chinese Garden Festival

U.S., 1941

Hollywood stars gather at the famed Pickfair estate for a garden party to raise funds for a war-torn China.

35mm, b&w, 11 min. Director/Producer: Harriet Parsons. With: Harriet Parsons, Mary Pickford, Barbara Jo Allen, Kay Aldridge, William Bakewell.

The Enchanted Cottage

U.S., 1945

For her first feature producing project, Parsons tapped screenwriter DeWitt Bodeen to adapt the 1921 play. The duo imbue real-world pain from their own repressed queer lives into their romance about a disfigured war veteran who finds love with a plain housekeeper after falling under the spell of an enchanted cottage. Parsons' first triumph was nearly never hers: after she pitched the project, it was reassigned to a more established male producer. Only in reaction to Hedda Hopper's scathing editorial accusing RKO of gender bias did the studio relent.

35mm, b&w, 92 min. Producer: Harriet Parsons. Director: John Cromwell. Screenwriters: DeWitt Bodeen, Herman J. Mankiewicz. With: Dorothy McGuire, Robert Young, Herbert Marshall, Midred Natwick, Spring Byington.

About the The 2022 Marina del Rey Film Festival

The Marina del Rey Film Festival was created in 2012 as an independent film festival on the westside of Los Angeles. Jon Gursha and Peter Greene worked the international markets for independent film distribution.  During this time they created the Marina del Rey Film Festival to make a world class independent film festival for independent filmmakers. The idea started on a flight back from the European Markets and festivals in 2011 the festival was born.

We wish them all the very best of luck in touching audiences, and hope they meet with the greatest of success. All artists, professionals, journalists, and film lovers are cordially invited to the Croisette once again from 16 to 27 May 2023, so that we might continue coming together to uphold our love for the silver screen. See you very soon — and long live cinema!

Cannes Guide
The ultimate guide to attending the Cannes Film Festival, for filmmakers and film industry professionals.

How do I submit a film to the fesitval?

The core rules for applied to all films by the Festival when it comes to submissions are:

  1. Films that have been produced during the twelve months preceding the festival
  2. Films whose exhibition has been limited only to their country of origin
  3. Films that have not been presented in any other competition or otherwise exhibited in any motion picture event, or on the Internet
  4. Films that respect the aims of the festival as defined in Article 1 of the festival rules: "The spirit of the Festival de Cannes is one of friendship and universal cooperation. Its aim is to reveal and focus attention on works of quality in order to contribute to the progress of the motion picture arts and to encourage the development of the film industry throughout the world."
  5. For short films, the running time must not exceed 15 minutes in total (including credits).
  6. Feature films selected for Competition must be released theatrically in France following the festival according to the French media distribution laws.

Note that there are no separate programmes for documentaries or animated films at the Cannes Film Festival. Feature documentaries are very rarely invited into the competition and no animated film has ever been selected. Animated and documentary films do occasionally make it into the official shorts categories (Shorts Competition and Cinéfondation).

All films (features and shorts) which are accepted into the festival must have a 35mm print or a DCP available for the screening, and be subtitled in French and/or English (depending on the original language of the dialogue). The costs for producing the screening copies and subtitles must be met by the film's producer or appropriate representative.

Submissions are normally open from January to March each year and can be made via the Festival's official web site. When it comes to feature films, the expense and complexity of screening in one of the official programs means that submissions are normally managed in conjunction with the film's sales agent and publicist. Occasionally, festival submissions may also be coordinated by a country’s national film commission or equivalent organisation.

More information about deadlines and film submissions can be found at the festival's web site.

Yuri’s Night is project of The SpaceKind Foundation a non-profit organization using the excitement and inspiration of space as a catalyst for educating and developing the next generation of explorers. We organize events, host projects, and encourage exploring new ideas. You may know The SpaceKind Foundation best for our namesake annual event in April: Yuri’s Night, The World Space Party! We combine space-themed partying with education and outreach. Every year on or around April 12th we celebrate all that humanity brings with us as we explore the cosmos: music, art, science, culture, and each other! We use space to bring the world together, to empower the greatest parts of who we are, and give vision to where we are going. Yuri’s Night parties are held around the world every April in commemoration of Yuri Gagarin becoming the first human to venture into space on April 12, 1961, and the inaugural launch of the first Space Shuttle on April 12, 1981..We support grassroots event organizers around the planet with informationlogosmultimedia, and publicity. These events can range from an all-night mix of techno and technology at a NASA Center, to a movie showing and stargazing at your local college, to a gathering of friends at a bar or barbecue. Yuri’s Night also produces two flagship events, in LA at the California Science Center and at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida. In 2020 and 2021, Yuri’s Night pivoted to all-digital flagship events. The live webcasts included a range of guests including artists, astronauts, musicians, Mars scientists, and cultural icons.
